Protecting our Land and Water

Decades of pollution, including from poultry production, has impacted surface and groundwater in the Cherokee Nation causing concern about the future of our water and our communities. To tackle this issue we will invest in communities that have already been impacted so no Cherokee community is left behind. We will fight to extend the moratorium on construction of new poultry houses in the communities that are already saturated with poultry waste. We will demand that state and federal agencies take swift action to complete in-depth studies on aquifers in our region, and insist they stop issuing groundwater permits without accurate information. We will work to ensure that Cherokee Nation has a greater role in protecting water quality.
